- 2010: Commercial trading begins In Ireland. Secures €800,000 investment from AIB Seed Capital Fund.
- 2012: Expansion to the UK.
- 2014: Launch of AI-enhanced Point Platform.
- 2016: Secures €3.3 million in Series A funding round led by ESB.
- 2020: Expansion to the US. Opens office in Houston, Texas. Secures €10.5 million in Series B funding round.
- 2021: Expansion into Japan.
- 2022: Expansion to Australia. Secures €6 million loan financing from Claret Capital.
- 2023: Expansion to Canada. Entered new market in US: CAISO, MISO, SPP. Acquired Veritone Business Energy.

GridBeyond is a smart energy company led by Michael Phelan and Richard O’Loughlin. Since its commercial launch in 2010, the company has been revolutionising the energy sector through the use of technologies and business models that are advancing the transition to the next-generation electricity industry. GridBeyond is now a global leader in managing assets of all types at the grid edge.
Beyond pioneering the world’s first hybrid battery and demand network, the company’s advanced AI-driven DERMS & VPP platform elevates asset management at the grid edge, optimising real-time energy usage, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring grid stability. The technology empowers businesses and utilities with future-proof energy solutions, revenues, savings, and funding, but also supports the integration of renewable energy sources into the wider energy mix.

Michael is a highly successful entrepreneur and business leader with 35 years of experience working in international business. He has a strong track record of significantly increasing wealth for companies such as Kleerex, Quaestus Management Consultants, Irish Export Board and Smurfit Finance.
Prior to joining GridBeyond, Michael held the role of CEO of Kleerex where he focused on transforming the company from an Irish focused, single product, manufacturing led business to an international service-led company employing over 400 people.
Under his leadership, revenues grew from €3m to €80m and it became the “Number One” supplier of bespoke fixtures displays and value added services in the UK market. During this time he was nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year in 2002.
He holds a BComm and an MBS from University College Dublin. In addition to his role at GridBeyond, Michael sits on the board of a number of scaling companies.

Prior to joining GridBeyond, Michael held positions at Philips, Microsol, PCAS and Duolog in automation and electronics. He was responsible for developing European, Asian and American markets and OEMs such as Invensys, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Alstom. In addition, he has facilitated several successful exits. Michael is a graduate of University College Dublin where he obtained an MBA in Business Administration, Management and Operations.”

Brian is the Strategy and Transformation Manager for ESB’s Customer Solutions business which is helping customers achieve net zero. He led the Energy Services and Innovation businesses for ESB’s Electric Ireland retail brand, introducing a range of new smart home and demand side services in the Irish market when Gridbeyond’s pioneering demand side offering first came to ESB’s attention and subsequent investment. Brian has over 30 years of wide-ranging experience in the energy sector. He has held various senior roles in ESB ranging from the development of ESB’s extensive portfolio of wind generation assets to conventional power station operations. Brian’s initial career was as a lead engineer for GE on the installation of new power plants across the world. Brian holds a Bachelor of Engineering and a MSc in Business from UCD.

Prior to joining Gridbeyond, Aidan spent years working as a field / project engineer for Rockwell Automation both in the UK and Ireland delivering automated solutions across all the different industrial sectors. Aidan developed extensive practical experience programming PLC’s, configuring VSD’s and commissioning bespoke solutions to a wide range of clients.
Since joining Gridbeyond in 2017, Aidan has managed the customer facing technical team in designing technical solutions, developing proposals and overseeing project delivery in all our markets.
